Report: Preparation of C1
Date Monday June 16, 1997
Name:
Johan Åkerström
Place: Gasherbrum basecamp
Local time: 7.20 pm
"The weather at the basecamp is perfect - beautiful weather, apx. 0 C (32 F). Stefan has had pneumonia, but is already starting to feel better, Stefan also claims that the 8-day hike was the tuffest he has ever experienced... Besides Stefan another expedition member from the American team also has pneumonia.

Preparations for Advancement camp 1 (C1) are underway. Halfway up to C1, just after the giant ice falls, we are preparing a temporary camp. Tonight we will carry food up for four people along with the tent that will be used for C1. We are 2*2 men who are going to carry, and we will begin tonight at midnight - the reason we carry at night time is to be sure that the snow/ice on the ice fall will hold. We will climb with the help of moonlight and our headlights. If everything goes as planned we will be back tomorrow morning, before the sun has a chance to melt the snow."
